MODTHEBOX would like to thank Mark from Spire for providing the Spire SP-206 DigiPanel II for review.By:Jetion Date:2005-11-8 12:00:33 |
Introduction:
Anyone concerned with case and component temperature has more than a few fans humming away in their PC. Most have also wondered if their motherboard temperature probes are taking readings from this or some other fanciful dimension. With the creation of the baybus fan controller, using just a few simple switches running at 7v/off/12v the premod scene has really taken off. Today I have the pleasure of reviewing the Spire SP-206 DigiPanel II. Digitally controlling fan speed and reading temperatures off of 3 diodes, as well as providing front panel access to USB, Firewire, and Audio. The DigiPanel II provides essential services for both the overclockers and noise-conscious among us.
Specifications:
The DigiPanel II is a Multi-Functional Control Panel that features a bright and attractive indiglow-blue LCD display. Here are the features and specifications taken directly from the Spire website:

The SP-206 DigiPanel II arrived in a very plain and simple box that was lightweight and definitely unharmed. Ever the skeptic, my initial impressions were that the display was probably cheap plastic junk but in this case I was pleased to note that the display seemed solidly built, with an aluminum frame durable enough to avoid flexing and warping when pushing buttons. The package also includes a bundle of cables that are very well organized and neat. The cables consist of USB, Firewire and Audio extensions all labeled so that no mistake can be made when connecting them. The temperature probes come with little strips of thermal tape. A manual (very simple but at least its readable English) and 4 fine thread screws round out the complete package. |

The display has Microphone, Stereo, Firewire, 2 USB ports, as well as a clickable dial. All are present on a fairly spiffy looking clear blue acrylic on a beveled unpainted aluminum faceplate. Unlike many other baybus products I've seen, the entire construction is sturdy with the ports being the right size and the dial very solidly connected to it's electronic internals that provides a smooth action when turned.
